R1 learning competency

Lesson Summary

In simple terms, a robot is a machine that can perform tasks without the help of a person. Contrary to what is often portrayed in movies, robots do not always look or act like humans; they only function based on the tasks they have been programmed to do.

If you want to explain robots to children, you can utilize online resources like YouTube for visuals. Some examples to search for are Boston Dynamics, Tesla Robots, ILIC Desktop Pets, Amazon Robots, or Car Factory Robots.

To engage learners in understanding robots, a game like "Meet My Robot Friend" can be introduced. In this game, students are shown images or videos of robots and asked to define what they think the robot is and what distinguishes it from a human being.

Progressing across grades for understanding what a robot is:

  • Grade R: Basic understanding that a robot is a machine that can automatically perform specific tasks without continuous human control.
  • Grade 1: Understanding the purpose of robots and the services they provide.
  • Grade 2: Understanding the mode of operation of robots, including how they perform services, possibly referencing their moving and sensory components.
  • Grade 3: Advanced understanding that a robot is a programmed machine capable of sensing its environment, processing information, and performing actions autonomously or semi-autonomously to achieve specific tasks. Identification of moving parts, sensory components, and processing parts is expected at this level.
